School inspection in comparative perspective

Context, mechanisms and outcomes of accountability policies: a comparative review of 14 systems

With the participation of Professor Melanie Ehren, a leading international expert in school inspection and accountability policies, this seminar offers an opportunity for reflection and dialogue between international research and the Portuguese experience in school evaluation.

The seminar will take as its starting point a comparative study recently developed for the Centre for Education Systems in the United Kingdom, examining accountability systems in 14 jurisdictions: England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, the Netherlands, Poland, Finland, France, Singapore, New Zealand, Ontario, Japan, and Estonia.

The session will include a contribution from the Inspectorate-General for Education and Science on the External School Evaluation Programme, as it marks 20 years of implementation. It will offer an opportunity to reflect on the evolution of the Portuguese model, explore its current challenges, and situate it within an international comparative perspective.
